On The Fat Burning Diet program, carb-loading is utilized prior to going into ketosis, thus fat burning takes place." do you see the contradiction? Based on the above paragraph the during ketosis you'll be burning fat, if you are avoiding the ketosis by carb-loading then how the heck are you going to burn the fat? It is not explained any where. It's either ambiguous writing or just wrong concept. Either way is not a good news to the reader.

Also the recipes are plain lousy, example page 73 Grilled cheese Sandwich:

"Ingredients: 2 slices of 100% flourless no-salt sprouted grain bread, 2 oz of low fat cheddar cheese, 1 tsp of olive oil or butter. " this is un example of a carb-loading lunch. Who is he making fun of? The last time I had two slices of bread and piece of cheese for lunch I didn't call it a lunch. I called it an appetizer at best. So if you wanted to starve yourself then why in the world you'd be buying a cook book to show you how to prepare cheese and bread? lol,

Example of High-Carb side snack:

"Place a banana in your right hand, stem up. Grab top of the stem with you left hand, and peel downward until half the banana is exposed. Now take a bite, and enjoy!" Is it even funny to somebody?

This arrived in a gift box which unfortunately I couldn't use because of the large "Made in China" inscription on it, and I purchased this as a gift for someone who tries to abstain from China products. It also required the use of a screwdriver to attach the stovepipe, and there were no assembly instructions that I could find. My fingers got dirty with black dust after attaching all the parts and the black paint seems to rub off (and thus, the black dust). However it does look very cute and I plan to still give it as a gift without the incriminating box. I purchased this for under thirty dollars, free shipping.

Mickey Mantle was my childhood baseball idol. This book was first published in the early 1980s. I am fond of this book because even as a adult with a successful career I was still awestruck by Mantle. The book cover was different from the one shown here. I was working at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo California and went I heard that mantle was doing a book sign of this new book over in Westwood, I took a very long lunch break, went to Brentano's in Westwood bought the book and waited in a long linr to talk to Mickey and get his signature.

This is a well-written book about Mantle's life in baseball and includes a lot about his frienship and relationship with Billy Martin. All Mantle's books are well-written because he had the good esense to pick excellent sportswriters to ghost write for him. Mantle still appeared to be in good health at the time although the gray was showing in his hair. Liver cancer possibly a result of his heavy drinking and partying during his career took him out of this world too soon. The controversy over his liver transplant came much later as did his final book which was his best and had a heavy message. This book doesn't do that but it does give Mantle's side of the story on a lot of issues that were told much differently by the media. This included the famous brawl at the Copa Cabana bar that many think trigered the trade of Billy Martin to Kansas City. Casey Stengel loved Martin's heart and aggressiveness in the field, but he grew tired of Billy's antics that seemed to be corrupt his star player (Mickey Mantle).

HIS COMBINATION OF POWER AND SPEED WAS AWESOME. HIS ABILITY TO PLAY WITH PAIN MADE HIM A HERO WITH MANY FANS. THIS IS SAD IN MANY PLACES BUT I RECOMMEND IT FOR ALL YANKEE AND BASEBALL FANS. "The Mick" is about the legendary Mickey Mantle. The best part of this book is that it's told in the first person by Mickey himself. Mick was a great guy, and he doesn't edit himself in this book. My favorite part of this book was his upbringings. Any baseball fan knows the guy was a legend on the field, but his origins are less known. It tells of how his father and his grandfather would alternate pitching left and right handed to teach him to hit switch. Or the games he played while Dad was away at the mines. His siblings would box with him, or throw balls over their house and chase them down. If you like Mickey, or even just baseball, you'll love this book.

"Humble, Plain, and Good Reading" 2005-03-30

Mickey Mantle (1931-1995) tells his story in this readable and interesting book. Mantle was neither intellectually gifted nor particularly insightful - in these pages he comes across as plain and somewhat humble. Imagine the American League's biggest star running a family bowling alley in Dallas during off seasons in those days of modest salaries. Mantle tells of his antics with his teammates, the thrill of key games, trips overseas, etc. The superstar from Commerce Oklahoma was more responsible for the loved and hated Yankee dynasty of the 1950's thru 1964 than anybody. Mantle said he couldn't remember a single parade after another Yankee title - they were expected to win. Compare that with the 86-year championship wait in Boston, or the long pennant droughts of the White Sox, Cubs, and other teams.

This book came out in the mid-1980's and steers clear of the drinking problems that would lead to Mantle's death in 1995. This is not a great autobiography, but it is an interesting look from a surprisingly humble man.

"Not just in the West! " 2007-02-21

This book was given to me by a friend, when I was laid up for three months due to a riding accident. Most people don't know it - but hearty women like the ones referenced in these stories are still alive and well and working today. My hats off to you ladies - because the computer and cell phone era don't change a thing when it comes to getting up cattle, riding herd and fixing fence, feeding stock, even when you are not well. The work still has to be done. Livestock know no sick days!

Very well written. The stories were short, sweet, touching, informative. They tugged on your heart. They made your imagination kick in. They made you appreciate (or should have made you appreciate) what you live with today. I think women truly bear the soul of the earth. It made me laugh, and cry.

If you are interested in life in the western United States during the first half of the twentieth century, you will want this book. The same is true if you enjoy stories of how women coped and mastered the challenges of life in rural America. The memoirs and poems contributed by over 200 women are also of sufficient literary value to warrant attention. There are tales of fun, loss, adventure, sadness, achievement, and the fullness of life. It is a great book to keep on your end table, reading a few pages at a time and masticating on them before nibbling off another morsel. A capsule biography for each contributor is a tremendous addition. Reading this book is enormous fun. Be aware that the editors of "Leaning into the Wind" followed it with "Woven on the Wind" and you will want both of them

It got a bit repetitive though - I mean, ALL those stories of calving were a bit excessive. I bought this book during my first visit to the High Plains last week on my spring break in South Dakota. I enjoyed most of the stories - I didn't think they were all particularly and equally wonderful, but with so many writings you will have likes and dislikes. I did wish, however, that I could talk to some of these women and let them know that not all vegetarians and animal-rights activists hate ranchers. We're not all hippy-dippy airheads who don't know the real story of animal farming - the hard work and even love that goes into the raising of animals. It's just a difference of opinion regarding the sanctity of _all_ life. I felt attacked, quite a few times, while reading this book. Overall though, there were very inspiring stories and quotable quotes - "Pay a holy kind of attention" !!! Loved that one.

To start this book is to start a trip into one's own past. Whether we now live in the country or in a city, many of the stories told here are within our own familys' histories; I can feel my own German immigrant grandparents, farming on the plains of Eastern Colorado, within these pages.

The sheer eloquence of these plains women - their poetry and tales - tells much of the strength of the human spirit. I wept with them as they tell of the rigors of drought and the Depression; laughed with them as they tell of childish pranks; and prayed with them as they lived through weather we can only imagine today, snugged, cocooned, and protected as we are from the elements.

I would wish every high school American history teacher would include this in their curriculum. To have history not only educate, but entertain, is a rare treat. It is our roots that make us strong - just as the wheat that grows upon these same high plains.

The format is outstanding for its message: short essays and poems. One can chew off just as much as is right at any one time, without feeling that the tale has been interrupted. The eloquence of these prairie women, the beauty of their imagery, was a constant delight - even when their eloquence was manifested purely by sheer simplicity.

A string of books by Harry M. Caudill beginning in the early 60's with Night Comes to The Cumberlands kicked down the door for the region. Caudill's biography of a land where economic prosperity for a few had left others with very little ushered the Great Society into Central Appalachia, created the Appalachian Regional Commission, led to the rise of prominent Appalachian politicians like Robert Byrd and Carl D. Perkins, and as some critics would come to say, caused the region to become wholly dependant on Federal money. Slender is the Thread: Tales from a Country Law Office, finds an older Caudill looking fondly on the world he swung the wrecking ball to help destroy, a world of corrupt corporations, corrupt (but often likeable) political bosses and local power players, and a diverse crowd of Appalachian Stereotypes, as he reminisces in a what would most accurately be described as a series of short stories relaying the cases and dealings of himself and other local attorneys, his peers as well as his mentors, in which Caudill peppers with humorous anecdotes.

Caudill takes the title from a phrase used by his friend and colleague John Y. Brown I, a prominent Lexington criminal attorney. Caudill relates how Brown, who had planned on using the title for a book he never got around to writing, reflected on the uncertainty of the legal process, the blind goddess of justice, holding the scales in her hand by a thread, and how perfect justice could be easily corrupted and unbalanced by that slender thread. This theme is what Caudill uses to weave together a series of otherwise unrelated narratives of his experiences in Eastern Kentucky courtrooms and politics. He describes in a vivid storyteller's detail cases in which he wonders how the goddess of blind justice would have looked upon the decision. In one such case, involving an African-American miner who, after being ostracized by the local community for his alleged philandering with some of the younger women in the community, took vengeance by emptying a shotgun on the roof of a house where a party was taking place, a party he wasn't invited too. In the three months between his hearing and his trial, Caudill retells advising his client to make amends with the local black community, who had shown up full force at the hearing to see him off to prison. Caudill advises his client to pay for the damages to the roof, and begin attending church on a regular basis, moving up one pew a week, until, when he reaches the front pew, going to the altar to seek redemption. Caudill relates how that, much to the ire of the judge and prosecuting attorney the black community turned out again, this time to beg that the charges be dropped. After the charges are dropped, of course, the accused returned to his philandering ways, and came home one day to a vengeful wife, who put five .22 shorts into his back. Surviving the incident, the man and his wife subsequently "made up" and he wound up having to pay her fine of $200, which he claimed he was paying for "over forty dollars a shot"...Caudill comments that despite her past frowning on the measure, the goddess of justice somehow managed a smile that day.

Other days leave Caudill less certain. In other incidents, he describes jury tampering in both district and "squire" court, some by parents of involved parties, and other times just because a powerful "boss" enjoyed throwing his weight around. Caudill also questions the nature of the justice when it was in his favor, when he was awarded a third of the considerable estate of a Russian immigrant miner, since his heir lived in the USSR and the only contact that could be made with them was through the Soviet embassy, and the Judge knew that the heir would never see a penny of that money.

As he ventures into politics, Caudill describes machine politics of every sort, vote-buying, pardon-buying, and all other sorts of corruption that would make The Duke's of Hazzard's Boss Hogg smile. Caudill relays tales of a local salesman/land-grabber who, after killing his mistress's husband, buys a hundred-thousand dollar pardon from the governor, who later on, while running for Senator, the former governor asks the pardoned man's help, only to find out that he won't vote or support someone who he believes to be crooked. Caudill concludes his book with tributes to Carl D. Perkins, whom Caudill describes as being revered as almost a saint in Eastern Kentucky; even by his political enemies, and other local lawyers who he felt established the craft in Eastern Kentucky.

While Slender is the Thread is packed with colorful anecdotes about the Eastern Kentucky legal system, Eastern Kentucky lawyers and the people they represent, it contains little sociological "meat" so to speak, no theories or ideas are discussed, and nothing is quoted or even footnoted. Of course, Caudill is not writing for that purpose either. Slender is the Thread reads more like an evening of old lawyers swapping stories than an academic discussion on Appalachia, it's problems, it's people, and even it's legal structure. Unlike in his previous works, Caudill rarely finds outrage in the corruption he describes, at times it seems like he longs for it. While corporate corruption and the condemnation thereof was predominant in Caudill's earlier works, political and sometimes legal corruption doesn't seem to get under the skin of this Appalachian crusader that much.

Slender is the Thread, however, while not containing much sociological meat per say, is, and should be, a book of interest to people in the legal system in Eastern Kentucky and the rest of central Appalachia. With good reason it ranks highly on the suggested Summer Reading list for the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia. Prospective lawyers, politicians, and others who would be interested in practicing their craft in the Appalachian region would do well to read this book, which, although probably not as prevalent, much of the same structure Caudill describes still exists, as recent Federal vote fraud cases in Knott and Pike counties can attest to.

How could crooked politicians, coal and lumber companies take such advantage of a poverty stricken and illiterate people to hold them down like animals (or worse) generation after generation? The stories are fascinating but there is always the underlying sadness of knowing this actually happened and much of it still thrives. Little has changed in 200 years.

Slender is the Thread is an account of the attorney/author Harry M. Caudill's law practice in the Appalachian community of Letcher County, KY. In his book, Caudill relives various cases and political events in his life in this country county. Much of his writing is witty and satirical in dealing with some very serious issues. He writes of corruption in the legal and political system as well as "mountain" ways of dealing with daily problems in the lives of mountain folk. The book provides vivid and colorful accounts allowing the reader to become absorbed in Caudill's words to the point of feeling like you are there. The names of various real persons and politicians in Letcher county are mentioned in the book. The book also provides some very interesting history of Letcher county and Appalachian region of Kentucky. Caudill has written other books like "Night Comes to the Cumberlands" and "Theirs Be the Powers." Caudill is presently dead and his books on Appalachia are very scarce but well worth the extra effort to obtain for reading. I rate "Slender is the Thread" with four stars.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who just moved to Cleveland and hasn't had a lot of time to explore, and I used it to plan my trip when I visited him. Moon handbooks seem to have attractions for visitors and residents alike, with a good mix of smaller and larger venues. The neighborhood maps with recommendations clearly labeled by category in color are extremely helpful, so you can quickly get an idea of the neighborhood you're looking at, e.g., is it densely packed with restaurants, bars, or cultural attractions? I also bought the Baltimore version.

I recommend this book not because it is worthy of praise but because it provides insight into the mindset of the Neo-Confederates. The true title of this book should have been "White, Protestant & Southern By the Grace of God".

There is scarcely any mention of African-Americans in this book, despite the fact that they are as "Southern" as the author. When they are mentioned, it is only to complain of their disloyalty to their masters during the Civil War.

Also given short shrift are white Southerners of non-Protestant background (e.g., Jews, Italians, Irish, etc). When any are

quoted, it is only to reinforce their status as outsiders who recognize their place in a WASP

dominated society and express their gratitude as "tolerated minorities".

The South gave us the Blues, Jazz, Dixieland and Rock & Roll, along with the likes of

Louie Prima, Bernard Baruch, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron, but you would never know it from this piece of League of the South propaganda. And I won't even get into Grissom's slanderous lies about the North.

Savoring The Seasons is a cookbook celebrating the seasons and culture of the northern mid-west. The recipes are rich in cultural heritage, as well as history of its people and food of its environment.

Beth Dooley is a teacher and writer who lives in Minneapolis. She has also written the books: The Heartland, Recipes From Massachusetts, Peppers: Hot and Sweet, plus more! Lucia Watson is the chef and owner of the famous Lucia's in Minneapolis. She was nominated for a James Beard Foundation in 2004 for the Best Chef in the Mid-West.

I was actually most impressed by this book. I expected this region of the United States to be devoid of culture or any tasty foods. I was most surprised and extremely impressed by my findings in this book. There are numerous black and white photos from the past of farmers working the fields, and handling their livestock. There are photographs of woman in the kitchen, of Native Americans, and much more. There were also many drawings to help create the history of the people here.

There are 200 recipes contained within this book holding tradition, yet with a modernized touch. The recipes were very easy-to-read and understand. They were extremely straight-forward. The only trouble with the recipes are if you do not live in an area to find yourself rabbit, venison, squab, grouse, quail, or pheasant. But, for me, the book is worth it anyway. The recipes also indicate the cultural heritage of its people: Romanians, Sioux Indians, Poles, Germans, Austrians, Scandinavians, Hungarians, Russians, Czechs and more. Excellent recipes worth trying are: Spiced Blueberry-Lemon Preserves, Mixed Kebabs with Orange-Honey Marinade, Apple Harvest Fruit Tart, and Sausage and White Bean Soup - all eaten by my house of finicky eaters!

Chapters contained within this book include: Milling & Baking; Henhouse & Dairy; Barnyard & Smokehouse; Seasonal Kettle; The Communal Pot; North Woods & Prairie; Deep Lakes & Swift Streams; Backyard Gardens; Preserves & Pickles; Come For Coffee; and Pride of the Heartland.

I have purchased this book for not only myself, but for family members and friends as well. I would describe the work as Alice Waters meets the Midwest. The results are a book you could practically devour! The book emphasizes freshness and local produce as the key to producing outstanding food.

I am also part of the diaspora of Midwesterners on the West Coast, and this book helped reconnect me with those roots. The historical anecdotes about food ways of the past sparked a spirited discussion with my grandparents about their favorite "old-fashioned" foods and our family food traditions.

The recipes are clear and concise with great results. I have tried the Sugar cookies, corn pudding, Radish and Cucumber salad, Roasted Vegetable Strudel (YUM!)and the Chicken Sautee with Seasonal Variations (Summer).

I came across this cookbook while browsing the bookshelf of my local public library. Being from Wisconsin, I enjoyed reading the recipes and the stories between! It was a wonderful book, so much so, that I was willing to pay a "late fee" in returning it! We tried several recipes, and loved them! It immediately went to the top of my "Books to buy" list! I am very disappointed to find that it is out of print. Until it is available again, I will be borrowing it from the library frequently!

"Can't find a better book to travel with in Central America" 2009-10-19

If your traveling in Central America I highly recommend this book, I've never seen one that does the job better, as is the case most of the time with lonely planet. If you're going to more than one country in C.A. than get this, carrying a guide for each country can be annoying and those issues don't provide that much more information. "Missing important information. Poor recommendations" 2009-04-15

Lonely Planet fails yet again with this book. Especially poor are the Guatemala and Honduras sections.

My main problem with Lonely Planet is that they focus way too much on bars and restaurants. As a consequence, they leave out more vital information. For example, I arrived at the border of Guatemala. The book had no information about where to find a bank or ATM. Not knowing, I paid a scammer with a cab about $5 to drive me one block to the bank machine.

Once I arrived in Tikal, I met a representative of San Juan Travel, recommended in the guide. The guide also recommended to reserve a seat on the late shuttles to Flores. The rep (Cesar Carrera, avoid him) proceeded to take my money for a shuttle that never arrived. The rep was driving a van labeled "San Juan Travel" in case you think I just stupidly paid some random hustler.

Later, I found out that San Juan Travel is charging 50% more for shuttle services than other companies in Flores. This is yet another one of the problems with the Lonely Planet. Once they recommend a company, that company often ceases to try, and the standards are lowered and prices are raised because they now have virtually guaranteed business. Too many travelers blindly flock to their recommended places. But, those very hotels and restaurants tend to quickly become run-down. Lonely Planet becomes a victim to their own success.

Another issue I have is that this "traveling on a shoestring" rarely mentions the possibility of camping. The authors will recommend against certain places because "no accommodation for those on a budget." I went to some of these places anyway to find that it was often possible to camp... sometimes with the campground lending equipment.

I have found many of the Lonely Planet guides to be poorly researched (other than the history section which is well researched), and this guide is no exception. I am always amazed at the percentage of incorrect telephone numbers in the LP guides.

My recommendation... If you need a guide book for your travel, you are better off with one of the competitors.

I was really disappointed in this product. I used the book for a couple days and it never gave me any useful information. My first complaint would be the maps. The maps are confusing and a couple of them don't even have street names listed. This makes it very difficult to find anything. Also, I was reading through suggested bars one night and found one I wanted to go to. No address was listed. I then looked at the map, and the bar was not listed. I walked around the town, but with no idea where the bar would be located, I obviously never found it. This made reading Lonely Planet's suggested bars somewhat useless. I also found that just by being in Lonely Planet, the restaurant would no long be a good choice. Even if it was a good, cheap option before being in Lonely Planet, as soon as it is a suggestion the number of tourists is going to go way up. Therefore, every restaurant listed in the book was about double the price as everywhere else. So I would never go to the listed restaurants. The same is true for the hostels. Every backpacker is going to show up at the ones listed, so if you are the type who is hoping to pay for a dorm room and have it to yourself, or just a couple other people, don't go to a Lonely Planet hostel. Also, I would say Lonely Planet uses "hot showers" a bit loosely when describing hostels. I went to a "hot shower" hostel with freezing water.

My suggestion is to of course get a guidebook. It's nice when you show up in a town to have some idea where you are and a few ideas of what to do. But get a less used guide so you aren't surrounded by tourists every time you want a cup of coffee. And really just asking other tourists where to stay, eat, and what to do is the best idea.

Wow, I picked this book up at a paperback swap and now I know why someone was so eager to get rid of it. This book is so boring. The main characters are in love with each other almost by page 3 and they just praise each other for the remainder of the book. The dialogue is so stilted and unrealistic. I'm looking forward to returning to the paperback swap and pawning this one off on some other unsuspecting person.

The characters fall in love within hours(literally), White shield tries to help Janice find her lost brother and adopted daughter(which is really sweet),and that is the entire book. Although there is not much to it, Savage Devotion was well written(technically). I recommend this book for a "not-in-depth" read, and for relaxation.

I must admit that I've never read any of the Cassie Edwards' "Savage" series before, so some of her other books might have redeeming value, but not this one. "Janice" meets "White Shield" as he rescues her from the waters of Puget Sound when the steamer the family was traveling on is wrecked. The two fall in love, all too immediately. The author has White Shield searching for Janice's lost brother and adopted daughter in a very disjointed way - back and forth to Tacoma - until it becomes boring. A malevolent "Stumpy Jackson" threatens to upset their lives (about ever fourth chapter). Just as visiting a foreign country does not make a visitor an expert on native lifestyle, the reader cannot learn about the Skokomish Indians by learning that "ah-hah" means "yes," even when the author uses it redundantly. Being from the Pacific Northwest made me pick up the book, but I was so disappointed with the read, that in all honesty, I could not recommend it.

Ordinarily I really enjoy a new Cassie Edwards novel, but this one really falls flat. Not only do the characters not particularly endear themselves to the reader, they "fall in love" much too easily, and from there, the story becomes so painfully predictable that this novel quickly goes from being a so-so paperweight to a wallbanger and doorstop. What a good romance needs is conflict - and there is no real conflict between Janice and White Shield, making their story flat and uninteresting.

What the "Savage" series needs is either to die off quietly or some new, fresh ideas. Infusing a novel with historical information about the various Native American tribes is simply not enough to keep this slowly sinking boat afloat.

In this flawless biography of the Wright brothers, Tom Crouch (chairman of the department of aeronautics at the National Air & Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution) explains the background, personal and technical factors behind the first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on the 17th December 1903.

The original aircraft is in the Smithsonian and says on the label, "By original scientific research, the Wright brothers discovered the principles of human flight as inventors, builders, and fliers they further developed the aeroplane, taught man to fly, and opened the era of aviation." Crouch looks at each of these elements but goes further in showing their persistence, strong family ties and complete integrity. I had the feeling that if any of these pieces was missing it would never have happened. Altogether a great book.

As a very minor point, it would have been useful to have diagrams to help follow the more technical aspects of the design changes.

A caricaturistic version of Edward Abbey is a familiar figure in the pantheon of environmentalism. His best work, DESERT SOLITAIRE (Ballantine Books, 1985)), and perhaps best known work, THE MONKEY-WRENCH GANG (Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2006), inspired a generation of wilderness seekers and iconoclasts, spun off EarthFirst! and other direct-action environmental groups, and offered up a larger than life anti-hero, successful in spite of himself. The Abbey visible in his personal journals couldn't help but be far more complex, and these thoughtfully selected excerpts offer a daunting portrait. On the one hand the writer was a graduate in philosophy and passionate afficianado of classical music, powerfully drawn to the academy, a Fulbright scholar and sometime professor. On the other he was rebellious, prickly and explosive in social situations (four stormy marriages interlaced with innumerable affairs and dalliances), utterly dismissive of the eastern literary establishment ... and in perpetual anguish during the long years that the eastern literati ignored him. He was utterly devastated by the leukemia death of one wife -- thrown into a year-long depression -- despite the fact that they were separated and headed for divorce when the disease struck. (It appears that his shaky self-esteem was salved by the attention of successively younger women -- not an unusual phenomenon, particularly among the celebrity set.) That said, his successes were powerful as well: a passion for wilderness, a dedication to his vision of an earth saved from total development and despoliation -- expressed in fiction and non-fiction -- with a wit and descriptive power that has underlain much of the success of late 20th century preservation and protection. It is hard to envision a more honest autobiography than a personal journal, and hardly common that such a record is maintained over so many years (from 1946 until twelve days before his death in 1989, though the early volumes were destroyed in a flood), and then made public. This is a revealing look at a singular and influential figure in our recent history. Cactus Ed, you were one hell of a piece of work.

This book is a nicely edited version of Ed Abbey's journals, and, as an Abbey fan, I found it very illuminating. Here we get to see Abbey as he sees himself instead of the Abbey the we see through his books. The men went through a lot and put himself through a lot, and it is very amazing to watch him mature through his writing from his early twenties until the weeks before his death at the age of 62. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to know more about how Abbey experienced his own life and writing in contrast to the persona developed as the cult hero of the Monkey Wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire.

This is the most self-absorbed author I have ever read. Perhaps this was not a good book to begin with, having never read any of his others. He is endlessly amused at his own wit, endlessly fascinated with his own horniness. His women are a sad parade of vaginas; world-shaking events reduced to how they will affect his own narrow, hedonistic world. The sad part is that I agree with many of his opinions on religion, the environment, business, etc. Unfortunately, his "look, Ma, I'm writing!" style of expression gets quite tedious. This is pseudo-intellectual, verbal vomit...don't waste your money like I did. (Sorry, Abbey-lovers)

"Truly an excellent companion" 2006-07-05

I bought this book to read while on a two-week trip to Alaska. Of course, what with all the sunlight and all the things to do, I did very little reading. But it's no reflection on this book, which provides a wonderful assortment of perspectives on a truly unique place. One aspect I particularly liked was that the selections spanned over a century and thus gave a good historical perspective. (Though stylistically, the earliest ones can be the toughest reads.) It also did a good job of covering the vast geography of Alaska.

The only downside is that Alaska continues to change rapidly, experiencing rapid economic and population growth, not to mention the effects of global climate change, so I would love to see what some very recent writers have to say.

The acknowledgments at the end are useful.

This is a marvelous collection of essays written about life and travel in Alaska during the past 100 years. It has lots of well-known contributors: John McPhee, Ann Morrow Lindburgh, John Muir, Charles Kuralt, et al. But almost every piece, even from the most obscure writer, had me mesmerized. Perhaps the most haunting tale was a reprint of the diary entries from a man known only as "V. Swanson," who perished in a cabin in the wilderness in 1917.

I was fascinated by the stories of daredevils doing unbelievably brave and crazy things: climbing through ice caves buried within glaciers where the climbers literally had to inhale in order to squeeze through, knowing a shift in the ice could kill them all at any moment...climbing the face of Denali in winter, losing toes to frostbite...coming face to face with a grizzly who smashed in the window of a tiny cabin. Being decidedly NOT a daredevil myself, I would get most of the way through each of these stories scratching my head as to the motivation of these people. Generally, by the end of each story, I understood what made them tick. Reading these essays has made me feel life in Suburbia is just a little too boring, too timid, too soft.

Well written story of 2 sisters, growing up poor but proud in northern Brazil in the 1920's, when a band of vigilante types kidnaps the sister Luzia. Her life becomes centered around survival: living in the jungle, running from the "law", and gradually falling in love with the leader of the gang, Hawk. Meanwhile, the other sister, Emilia, leads a more conventional life, married to a wealthy man she doesn't love. The story alternates between the two sisters' lives, and their eventual reunion (of a sort). Beautiful writing, but I did feel the story lost momentum when it gained a political bent about midway through. Long, but worth it.

Emilia and Luzia are two young sisters being raised by their Aunt Sofia, in the backcountry of Brazil, since both of their parents have passed away. Their aunt has taught them to sew and they both sew beautifully.

Emilia is the older sister and she has romantic longings. She dreams of falling in love and enjoying society in the big city with her husband.

The younger sister, Luzia, dreams of escape too. As a young girl, Luzia falls from a mango tree and when her arm doesn't heal right, she is dubbed "Victrola" by everyone in town, even the priest. She longs to get away from the constant teasing.

Their lives change forever when bandits invade their town and take Luzia with them upon their escape. Aunt Sofia dies shortly thereafter and Emilia submits to a loveless marriage since it wouldn't look right for her to live on her own.

The sisters live very different lives - one as a bandit and one as a member of a wealthy, well-respected family in the city - yet their lives and their love for each other remain forever entwined.

The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles started a little slow for me, but I think that was more a reflection of some things that were going on in my life, rather than of the book itself, because once I got into the book, I didn't want to put it down. The story is told from the point of view of Luzia and Emilia in alternating chapters, and the author did a wonderful job of showing how the same event affected each sister. The sisters are very different and yet so similar and I could relate to them both. The character development and storyline in this book are fantastic! This book is set in the late 1920's to mid 1930's and it is historical fiction at its best! It is obviously very well researched and I found the historical details to be fascinating. The Seamstress is the author's first novel and I sincerely hope she is busy working on another one.

"Wonderful Historical Fiction Debut" 2009-08-09

I admit that I usually shy away from books this long (it's over 650 pages), but after I read the description, I knew I had to read it -- it sounded so good to me. It did take me a few days to read THE SEAMSTRESS, but it was so worth it! After I finished the book, I called both my dad and my sister and told them they just had to read it. And if my word isn't enough to convince you, THE SEAMSTRESS has already been awarded the Winner of the Friends of American Writers Award for Fiction and Elle Magazine's Grand Prix 2008 for Fiction.

THE SEAMSTRESS is one of my favorite reads of the year. It did start out a little slow for me, but I don't know if that's because I just couldn't focus on it without distractions. I will say this (don't think I'm awful) that I did find myself hiding out in my bedroom so I could read this book in peace! I didn't want to miss a thing about this amazing story and its amazing characters. Since the book was about Brazil in the 1920 and 1930s, a place and time in history that I knew absolutely nothing about, I was fascinated by so much of it. I enjoyed learning about the political environment in Brazil at that time as well as the changing role of women, yet I also found the entire lifestyle of the cangaceiros to be incredible. What I think I appreciated the most though, was how the author managed to juxtapose the two sisters' lives (one was unhappily married to an influential family while the other was living as an outlaw in the wild) while also showing their similarities.

I don't think I can even begin to express what an amazing writer Ms. Peebles is. Her storytelling abilities are remarkable, and her prose is just beautiful too. She created two incredibly real and complicated characters that are just so memorable. I am just blown away by how she effortlessly she went back and forth between the sisters' lives while also linking certain events to both of them. It was incredibly well done! I also loved how she incorporated so much symbolism into this novel especially as it pertained to a seamstress' skills. If you'd like to learn more about Ms. Peebles, check out this wonderful interview where she explains some of the ideas behind her book. Harper Collins also has a fun page devoted to the author; and Ms. Peebles also has her own website and maintains a blog.

I think THE SEAMSTRESS would make for a wonderful book club book even though it's a little bit (well, a lot) longer than most of the books my group reads. Don't let the length discourage you from picking it though -- maybe you could read it over the course of two months. I know when I finished this novel, I immediately wanted to talk about it with someone; and I'm sure you will feel the same way. There is a reading guide available with some great questions. Some of the topics for discussion include: sisterhood, love and marriage, honor, redemption, Brazil's political environment, and lots of symbolism. It really is a very complex novel that has remained in my thoughts for days!

"What a pleasant surprise" 2009-04-01

We usually use books like this to give us good information on where to eat, sleep, see the usual sights and maybe get a few insider tips. Yet this was especially informative and educational, and after a winter visit to Yellowstone to watch wolves -- a great time to see wildlife, even if it's a little chilly! -- I been following the area's issues with great interest since returning home, in part because of what I learned in this book. This guide by Welsh and Moore is well-organized, intuitive and very useful. It has greatly enriched my travels in the parks and surrounding areas. The directions are clear and concise and the along-the-way points of interest and description of the terrain make the "getting there" a whole lot more fun. With this guide I feel confident in exploring these areas on my own. When time off is precious it is imperative that you have a guide that has done the research for you (so thoroughly) and allows you to make the most of your wanderings. Does anyone know of more guides of this caliber for the Northwest United States?

What I like about this book is that while it contains the usual helpful information about where to eat, sleep, shop and see the key sights (and sites), it presents a fascinating look into these two great national parks that are so close together yet so different. It's obvious that the authors spend a great deal of time here and understand the nuances of place. Especially intriguing were the insights into wildlife issues, fire and other important ecological matters, as well as what makes the surrounding communities unique.

What also set this book apart was the attention that Jackson Hole received as an important part of this great vacation landscape.

"A frustrating read." 2009-10-18

Overall, this was a good read, and I did like it. I'll get to the frustrating part later on.

Williams and her family moved into a house, and it was haunted. This book has a lot going for it. One of the biggest thing this book has going for it is that she doesn't stretch the truth, just to make the book scary, like other paranormal books. There's no demons, hooded figures, hell hounds, or demon dogs to drag people to hell. None of that. She just tells what happened to her and her family. Some of the experiences could be a little chilling. TV's, radios, lamps, lights, and smoke alarms go off in the middle of the night.

They see a man, woman, and two children, one teenage girl, and angels in their house. Some of the experiences are pretty funny, I loved the one with the bottle of beer. That just goes to show what happens when you don't believe in the ghosts that are in your house. If you want to find out what happened, you have to read the book.

Here's the frustrating parts of the book. Williams does a lot of research on the paranormal. She never mentions EVP's. If I was her, I'd want to do many EVP sessions in order to reach the ghosts in the house to see if I can help them. She doesn't do this.

Another part that bothered me is that we're told about something, but we as the reader don't have any closure to what we're told about. Here's an example. When Williams' husband is sleeping she sees the ghost of a teenage girl about a foot away just watching him. The ghost sees that Williams is watching her, and the ghost glares at her, and that's all we find out. We never find out the name of the ghost, or what she wanted. The reader is left hanging.

Williams went to a psychic to get some answers. I found this part strange. The psychic tells Williams that the ghosts want to know if she likes the flowers they put for her (that was an interesting part of the book). Can't the ghosts tell the psychic their names? I just found it strange that the ghosts want to know if she likes the flowers, but not the psychic their names.

I also was confused on why Williams felt scared. Many times, she said she felt as peace with the ghosts, but then all of a sudden she's scared. The ghosts have been nothing but nice to her, and not threaten her at all, but yet at different times she says how scared she is. I can' understand being spooked, but she said how comfortable she feels with them, and likes them..... but then for no reason, she's scared?

Like I said, I did have some problem with the book, but over all I liked it. This goes to show you that every haunted house is full of evil. There were just ghosts that didn't want to move on, and liked Williams' family.

If you read this book, you won't be sorry. I wasn't, it was an interesting read!

The way Dorah L Williams has captured her experience in the house is excelelnt, yet it is frustrating to read as there is no specific references to time as to what year it is that she moved into the house and the span of time that this activity went on for. The Second irritating bit is there is no reference to a town name or where the haunting took place.

It is great to write about the experience but as a reader we need to get details as we are buying a book about true hauntings as it has happened in real life, and if there is no reference to where or when, then what is the point of reading this book. She might have wanted to protect the privacy of her family which is fine, no reference in regards to address needs to be given, but when i read this book, there is no refernce to time or place, so am wondering if this house is in existence at all. Whether this is a true haunting at all, as the photos shown, you can get in anyone's backyard... And there are places where you can get old newspapers...

So Ms. Williams, please if you decide to write from now on, be more specific and dont waste our time or money.................

I think I read this entire book, but it's a little hard to tell given the choose-your-own-adventure format.

I really wanted to like this book. I decided to read it after an interview with the author regarding her new book appeared in the newspaper and made it sound interesting. But there's really nothing "pretty" about the mistakes "you" make in this novel. Almost every choice leads to rape and/or meth addiction. I also expected there to be more plot since this is for adults; I think each story would've been more interesting if the sections had gone into more detail and had more dialogue.

Highly amusing book. Nervous types probably wouldn't want to read this in a doctor's waiting room or on a plane flying over the ocean, but it's perfect for a stormy night in front of a cozy fire. I never heard of Choose Your Own Adventure books for kids, so the genre was new to me.

Many of the short biographies are cartoonish, but no more so than real life. Every day, someone wins a Darwin Award for stupid choices.

Pretty Little Mistakes meets all the requirements of a good read: enjoyable while making the reader think. I'm miffed, however, that sequel, promised for Spring of 2008, has still not materialized as of Fall of 2009. Apparently, McElhatton CHOSE to write a novel instead. And she made the wrong choice in allowing her publishers to promote the promised book at the end of the first one.

This is my first Heather McElhatton book. i happened across in a little book store in PA. This book is just plain funny! i love the simplicity of the choices and their out comes. They are not overly drawn out and exstensive. You either live or die or your happy or sad, you live a good life or ya don't. i really enjoy reading these adventures right before bed because they are short and sweet! My next read of course will be Her newest book - Jenifer johnson is Sick of being single. I'm sure it will be as good as this one....

A great book may start slow but builds momentum with each page until the pages turn themselves (The Story of Edgar Sawtell comes to mind). CYGAWA did the reverse: started out amusing but lost steam as the onslaught of complaints became long-winded, and then, plain boring. I read about 2/3 of the book, then stopped. I didn't care anymore how the story ended. Too bad since I visited and surfed Pavones in 2001 and was interested in certain parts of the book.

A wonderful modern story, with beautiful pictures which link to the story. I enjoyed the fact that she ties this story with the original in the 1800's so well. I found that I just could not put it down and many times I missed my lunch at work as I was so engrossed in the story. As mentioned about the photographs when she has her characters visit these places they are a real visual aid and help you imagine what they are doing their.

I loved both Elizabeth and Darcy's characters, also it was nice to read about a stronger Geogiana in both her character and personality, I also liked her husband too. I was not too impressed by David's character or Cecilia. But then again we all have favourites and Elizabeth and Darcy are mine, I was sad to read about their trials and tribulations due to others, but very happy when they were resolved.

I own a numerous amount of pride and prejudice sequels and would rate this in my top 20 as one of the best modern stories.

I just finished this story this morning with a good cup of English tea and my cat curled in my lap. Although long, this was an enjoyable read. In fact, I never even felt that it was all that long because it moved quickly and every time I set it down, I dreamed of the characters and what they were doing. It's filled with conflicts and strong emotions, characters that are multi-dimensional and complex, and that's just the way I like it. I also enjoyed the conflict resolution. It was intense, satisfying, with all the things I look for in a good, well written story.

I especially liked the journals and how they were used to enlighten the characters to the secrets of the past that overshadowed their future, especially George Darcy's journal that he left to his son, David. I was so drawn into the story that I didn't want it to end. The story has many surprises, things I wouldn't have thought of, but you'll have to read to discover them for yourself.

The Cumberland Plateau has two major plot-lines and one minor with several small plot-lines that enhance the major ones. If you enjoy a deep read that hooks you and keeps you, this is for you. As for me, I am anxiously looking forward to the next installment. Dana Darcy cannot come quick enough for me. This one is a keeper!

I hate, hate, hate!, packing a book when I go hiking/backpacking but this is such a good resource I do anyway. Backpacking, Camping and Hiking are wonderful activities that require a great deal of knowledge in order to safely and comfortably enjoy your surroundings.

To the beginner, tasks such as gear selection and trip planning can be a scary and confusing experience but armed with the suggestions in this book these decisions are actually quite easy.

This book covers many important aspects of outdoor travel including Basic Trip Planning, Gear Selection, First Aid, Safety, Travelling with Children, Wildlife and so much more.

This book can be compared to similar "Wilderness Survival" manuals including the Army's FM 21-76. The main difference is that this guide is much more gear focused and shows you how to get the most out of your gear while enabling you to enjoy mother nature.

I give this book 5 out of 5 and certainly recommend it.

The historical chapters were interesting. However, the contemporary story did not fit because it was too predictable and reminded me of romance novels (unrealistic fantasy). I also felt this book was a way of convincing readers that Native Americans are wrong and ignorant to insist that sacred artifacts, etc. be removed from museum displays. Museums can make replicas which will also serve to educate the public.

This was one of those books that I couldn't put down once I started....I loved to learn so much from this book of times gone by. Of course it was fun to read about an area of the US that I have just recently visited and nice to envision how people lived so many years prior to us. There are virtually dozens of Bette Davis books that have been released over the years, especially since her death. "Dark Victory" is one of the best. Not only does author Ed Sikov give the reader a nice overview of her life in pictures, but he also goes into great detailed discussion about her personal life. If you have never read a book on Bette Davis before, or simply have just discovered her through her films, this book is a fabulous way to start getting anecodotes and information on one of the screen's greatest actresses. All her films are covered here from "Jezebel", "Dark Victory", "All About Eve", to "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?". Her marriages and love affairs and her children are discussed in inate detail as well. Mr Sikov writes candidly on the good side of Bette Davis, but he is not shy in writing about her shortcomings. This is an excellent read; I had the book completed in two days. Publisher's Weekly says the book is "perceptive and superbly written". "Dark Victory" also comes with 35 black and white photographs.

There is nothing new here that any Bette Davis fan hasn't already learned from other biographies. As a matter of fact, the author has taken bits and pieces from all the other biographies and spliced them together here to formulate a narrative that has been hashed and rehashed over and over.

There is also a HUGE error in the pictures. There is a photograph of Patricia Neal standing by a window and the author claims it is Davis in all her beauty....it is not....it is indeed Patricia Neal as I've seen this photo of hers in other movie books.

Save your money from this one if you are a collector and a Davis fan. You will be disappointed. If you are new to Davis and are not familiar with her this will do.

One more thing: It is interesting to note that if Davis suffered abuse at the hands of WIlliam Grant Sherry, her third husband, it is because SHE provoked it. But the abuse was worse from Gary Merrill who was a whack job. The proof lies in the fact that William Grant Sherry married Marion Thompson, B.D.'s nanny and STAYED HAPPILY married to her for the rest of his life....why no abuse there???? Makes one wonder......

A complex mystery, that suddenly breaks off into two threads, the mystery behind Mr. Buchanan's murder and the sudden disappearance of young Tink, kept me flipping the pages till almost four in the morning to find the truth about both. I loved the relationship Orphelia has with her soon to be adopted daughter Tink, as well as her grandmother Abby. I actually have two sets of favorite scenes in this book. One is when Ophelia reluctantly finds herself working with Cobra aka Ethan to find her daughter. And the other scene is when Ophelia, Abby and Aunt Dot cast a bit of a spell to find out where Tink is and Ophelia finds herself having a vision. The one thing I especially enjoyed how looking back, everything in the story ties together. Nothing is there in the story for no reason. THE WITCH IS DEAD is a great paranormal mystery and I look forward to reading more in this entertaining series!

Ms. Damsgaard is the author of numerous published short stories and resides with her family in small-town Iowa, where she has served as Postmaster for the last twenty years. She is currently working on the next Ophelia and Abby mystery, which again touches delightfully upon the paranormal.

Enjoyable read about a group of witches with psychic capabilities. I am not a complete fan of murder mysteries but this one provided some light moments with the addition of Aunt Dot, Ophelia's great aunt, from the Appalachian mountains. I enjoyed the psychic parts of the book as well as Aunt Dot's cavorting with fairies. However, for me the murders and dead bodies which are the murder/mystery part of the story were a bit gruesome. That being said this is still a worthwhile read and will keep you guessing about the mystery and chuckling at Aunt Dot until the end.

This was a thoroughly satisfying read. The characters of Ophelia and Abby continue to grow more intriguing, and my initial reservations about the introduction of Tink as a regular character are completely gone. Aunt Dot was a hilarious addition to a rather gruesome story, and the return of Cobra/DEA agent gave me hope for romance in Ophelia's future. The pace never lagged, and the parallel stories were fascinating. I cannot wait for the release of the next installment now!

As a long term hiker but relatively new to snowshoeing, this book was a Godsend. I really appreciate the maps, the personal views, the tips to make things go easier. It's like having a top notch snowshoeing expert showing you tips and tricks he has picked up from many, many hours on snow shoes. Makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. I can highly recommend this book. Well worth the money.

It seems to me that the author writes his memories of all these trails and it is interesting information. However, quite incomplete as to what I am looking for. The maps are so minimalistic, it is a joke. Having on the same map how to get to the trailhead AND the hike itself cannot work. If you get lost on the trail on a snowday, this book will not help you avoid a night in the mountains. No topos, not even indications of summits and other recognizable viewpoints.

Regarding avalanches, some information is given but again, very vague. No committment from the author is given, no useful information as to alternate routes in case of avalanch risk.

To summarize, this book is valuable from a tourist standpoint, that wants to know where in the mountains there are interesting hikes and what is interesting about them. Now, if you are looking for a guide book, that will allow you to go there on a snowy day, improvise a little, don't get this one.

I don't have any recommendations for another one, as I have not found that other book yet.

If you, like my family, don't want to live out in the middle of nowhere, this is a great book for "greening" an existing home.

"An Amish Story I Enjoyed" 2009-10-28

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Lancaster County this past summer and finally got to experience what the Amish lifestyle really was about. It was wonderful to see all the books I've read come to life. I was able to fully appreciate and understand everything I had read about the culture. Therefore I was excited when I read this book because I recognized the settings because I had actually been there.

This story was really fun to read. I loved learning more about the culture and it was interesting to see Lillian change throughout the book. I felt that the Stoltzfus family were a bit less traditional than most other Old Order Amish families. They didn't seem as strict or condemning as other stories have portrayed families who have lost a child to the "outside world." I also remember reading that they had a recliner in the house. I guess I just had this feeling that the Amish only had wooden furniture and never pictured a lazy boy in the middle of the living room. I was glad that her grandparents did allow her to wear her jeans until she felt comfortable enough to wear Amish clothing. Also loved reading about the food because I absolutely love Amish food.

While I really liked this book, I did feel that it seemed to fall in the stereotype that everyone who comes in touch with the Amish suddenly wants to become one. It also bugged me a little that Lillian just assumed she's Amish because it's in her blood. While she may have Amish roots, she was raised "Englisch" so she's not Amish by choice. I wasn't really a fan of Samuel although I did like his son very much. He just came across as very standoffish to me.

Overall I really liked the author's style of writing. It was a very refreshing read and it made me eager to read the rest of the books in the series. This is one of those Amish books that I really liked. It doesn't feel like an agenda is being pushed at you. It's more comfort reading than escapist reading this time around.

"Okay, but didn't find the romance convincing" 2009-10-27

One thing that this author does very well is portray a convincing transformation of the main character, Lillian, from "English" to Amish. I was quite impressed with that aspect. The way that she gradually eases into some of the Amish practices, and then a few more, and the reasons for doing so, were very convincing.

Unfortunately, I did not find the romantic interest very convincing, and that was a huge part of the book. Samuel Stolzfus, an Amish widower with a young son, is portrayed as not believing that marriage with Lillian would be an option, as she is non-Amish. However, he is very clearly attracted to her, knows it, knows his son is hoping she'll be his mother, and so, he spends lots of times hanging around with her saying they're just friends. He just wasn't written in a way to convince me that he was that foolish, and I also have a hard time believing that sort of conduct would be accepted among the Amish between two single people, one Amish and one not. Then there's Lillian's grandfather who also, unbelieavably encourages the relationship before Lillian has even come close to converting. I didn't find his interaction with their relationship that convincing either.

Then there's the portion that may not apply to most people. Lillian comes across as much more the bubbly sort than I would normally gravitate toward. The fact that I wasn't drawn to her character probably led me to be a bit less willing to suspend disbelief than the average reader.

I've read the next book in this series, and actually liked it a bit better (though Samuel's character no longer seems like the same person.). But, if you're looking for a book from the Amish genre to pass an afternoon with, I'd recommend instead Leah's Choice: Pleasant Valley Book One

I enjoyed Beth Wiseman's Plain Perfect last year so when the Thomas Nelson book review program offered her new book Plain Promise (A Daughters of the Promise Novel) I was happy to request a copy.

Plain Promise is the story of Sadie Fisher, a young Amish widow who rents out her guest house to a single man from California. Shortly thereafter, his autistic young son is dropped off by his ex-wife, who shortly thereafter is killed in a car accident. Kade is a wealthy developer who, despite all his toys, is deeply unhappy. She feels attracted to him, but knows that being with him would mean leaving her family and friends. She has been corresponding with an Amish man in Texas for some time; will she marry him? Kade is attracted to her, and to some extent, to the Amish lifestyle, but can he fully accept the Amish lifestyle? The book also contains a sub-plot about a romance between two elderly Amish, which I thought was sweet.

I enjoyed the book. There were a few references to characters featured in Wiseman's other books, but this book is fine as a stand-alone novel. As in Plain Perfect, the outsider comes to Lancaster County looking for peace on his or her own terms and finds it on Amish terms. I'd be real curious to know how often people to convert to the Amish faith/lifestyle and how often it really sticks. As fascinating as I find the Amish, I find it extremely difficult to imagine leaving this life for theirs. Faith is a part of the book, but isn't really preachy.

Plain Promise is an easy feel-good read and I recommend it to those who enjoy books about the Amish or those who like clean romances.

After I read this book, I felt the wilderness could never be fun again. I was completely wrong, but that's the tone this book has. The entire book tells you what not to do and what could go wrong. That's very important to know, but what is almost as important (and a lot more interesting) are things to do: suggestions about how to make things easier, how to have fun, how to bring the love of the outdoors to other members of your group.

The good: There were a couple good ideas in among the mind-numbing numbers of admonitions (damp socks in sleeping bag: genius). Also, the packing lists at the end of the book can be good reminders.

As far as I can tell, it's good for a very small class of people: complete beginners who will find all the rules to be new, but are so excited about backpacking that they won't be turned off by the boring, pessimistic book. Personally, I learned just as much from the much shorter section of tips in the beginning of Backpacking California, even though I had not backpacked a whole bunch before reading either.

Curtis has written a true gem. This book will get any novice on his or her feet within the time it takes to read the book. The book is comprehensive in breadth and is quite detailed without getting too cut-and-dried (or maybe I just find the subject matter too interesting =-P). Clearly, the author knows what to cover and to what extent -- there's something to be said for a man who, as the head of the Princeton Outdoor Action, must get a lot of contact with people new to backpacking. Even somewhat experienced backpackers will be able to gain much useful information from this book, particularly from such unusual topics as reading and predicting the weather. Additionally, Curtis' almost die-hard approach to true leave-no-trace backpacking is quite appealing to me -- it only takes a few careless or reckless people before a previously pristine location is ruined for weeks or even months. All in all, this is *the* must-get guide to backpacking. It's comprehensive, adequately detailed (1/4 to 1/3 of the book is dedicated to first aid!) and, best of all, reasonably cheap! =-)

This book covers everything that a general backpacker needs to know about hiking and camping. The few things the author doesn't cover (great detail about hiking specific specialized terrain, for example), he lists additional resources for. This book is well-written and clearly organized, and includes wilderness first aid, cooking and menu-planning, navigation, how to pack a backpack comfortably, how to select gear, and where to go for more information. There is much more included in the book, including stories from the author's own experience, and some information about ultralight backpacking. Especially valuable is the detailed information about leading a group into the wilderness, how to send out a search party, how to signal for help in all environments, and how to ensure that everyone in a group is comfortable.

I've seen many other similar books, and none provide the excellent level of detail that this book provides. I recommend it most highly.

I've been backcountry camping and backpacking for 37 years, and Rick Curtis' Backpacking Field Manual is the best text I have ever found for teaching backpacking skills to group leaders and those new to the sport.

It is very evident that Curtis approached this manual with the mindset of a teacher, deciding which skills the student needs to learn, and building the necessary knowledge incrementally so the student understands completely. I found that because Curtis assumes that the reader has no knowledge of such simple things as how a camp stove works, that I learned things that I never knew about my own campstove, that were not even covered in the manual.

Another thing that makes this book especially good for all levels of backpackers is Curtis' coverage of Leave No Trace techniques. Curtis does a very good job of explaining the LNT guidelines and giving practical examples and suggestions for making the minimum impact on the ecosystems while we are backpacking and camping. The manual offers some food for thought by pointing out how many backpackers do simple things that have very significant impact on plant and animal life (e.g. Going swimming in streams and ponds without first washing off toxic chemicals like insect repellant and sun screen).

I think this book would be especially useful for leaders who are looking for an organized way to teach backpacking skills to students.

She finds that Old Man left her a big pile of money under the kitchen floor which leaves her a wealthy woman. But the sad story is that the house is destroyed in spite of Lurina's orders to preserve it.

Roger, Grace's son has moved to a new home in Salem North Carolina and is much happier than he has ever been. He now also has a new partner, Lenny. He and Grace get to be a little closer in this book, and reach more of an understanding with each other.

I seriously dislike when translators change the nature of books by seletive translation. "Oh, I don't think this sections is interesting. Let's not bother translating it." This book only includes 25% or the recipes in the original. The book is still valuable for the historian who wants to know more about life in Russia 100 years ago. For the cook who wants to cook Russian food you just have to accept that the translator removed 75% of the recipes. So it looks like we will have to wait for the full translation of this book.

I found this book recommended to me by my Russian professor, and after eating at a Russian dinner hosted by my university's Russian club, I decided I really had to have this book. It has an excellent introduction which covers a large variety of topics on Russian cooking through the years. Another thing I like about it is that it uses mainly ingredients that are commonly available today. Although a few of the ingredients used are highly unusual today (like dried backbone of a fish), they appear in relatively few of the recipies. I am anticipating cooking recipies from it!

This is such a classic that it was intended, in the past, to be given to young housewives to be a much-used reference. As such, in addition to the predictable recipes for coulibiac (fish in pastry crust), sturgeon, borscht, kasha and Russian sweets, there is a wide variety of household food preservation and preparation you just don't find in today's cookbooks. Such as--butchering a pig and then portioning out, preserving and preparing the resulting meats. NOT for vegans or the fainthearted, believe me. Also, there are recipes for improving the flavor of homemade vodka (including how to make birch charcoal for the purpose.) And how to make imitation butter from mutton fat, how to get rid of the off-flavor in butter that is going rancid.

If you are a home-brewer, this is a surprisingly good book for making such things as mead and fruit wines and liquers. One caveat for the whole book; measurements are either baffling, in Russian terminology that has no English referent, or "two wineglasses" , etc. And for brewers, it requires some basic knowledge of the process.

For cooking, there are a lot of beef and fish recipes but the borscht recipes were disappointing as there were only of few of these and there are LOTS of ways to make borscht. However, for interesting reading on food history and technique, and for some authentic Russian cooking, this book is absolutely fascinating reading.

My grandmother immigrated to Canada from Russia well over a century ago and lived to the age of 104. With her she brought many authentic Russian recipes, but alas, they remained in her head and not on paper. This cookbook comes very close to the recipes I, as a child, can remember her preparing. Yes, it is true, that some aspects of the recipes found here are lost in the translation, particularly when it comes to measurements; however, in reality, that is how my grandmother, and many Russian homemakers in her time, prepared a meal. There was no such thing as a teaspoon of this or a cup of that. Accurate meansurements would have meant nothing to my grandmother, for like many immigrants in the 1800's she had little scholastic education. Her education came from the "school of hard knocks" and life's experiences. Measurements included "a little of this a small handful of that." I can remember her placing three fingers in a small cup and when the liquid reached the top, that was how much one used. Confusing? Yes, for the traditional chef, it would be. However, as one becomes experienced with Russian cooking, the delicious recipes found here will not seem like such a challenge to prepare - trial and error is often the best way of learning.

I'm really just beginning with this book, but it is already frustrating. Some reasons: Measurements are given oddly, like 1/2 pound flour, 2 glasses water. There will be an instruction to "bake" without mention of temperature or time. There will often be ingredients in the list which are not mentioned in the instructions. It seems to me that it was written as a technical reference for someone that already knew what they were doing in this cuisine. I strongly recommend that in future editions there be some editing and clarification done along with translation.

And it tells of the struggles she went through in paying the price to learn of life and her amazing stories in India,France..etc; were very interesting to read. I enjoyed her stories with the beloved Arensbergs' for they were very important in her life. Before this book I didn't have knowledge of most of the artists in her life. She has opened new doors! I laughed hysterically at her descriptions of her years with Pole and Steve.She is a riot!

An amazing woman really. This book will remain with me forever and I will read it again and again. For someone like myself can't beleve there is so much adventure in life. She died this spring at 105,in her heart 32. I would have loved to meet her.All I can do now is remember her and try to learn more about her life and art. I loved her and she is an inspiration to all humanity with her marvelious statements on the facts of life.Afterall,she lived 105 years and paid the price. A definate book to add to a collection for any Beato fan or curious book reader!

As a potter, I'd hoped to learn more about her art. However,there were some gems to be found in the text. I really enjoyed the stories about several other famous people in her life. She is brutally honest in her opinions and I like that. On the downside... it was a bit too "socially conscious" in places, for my own taste. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will read more by her. I wrote a personal letter to her, regarding her book and she answered me promptly... twice! Great lady! Wonderful clay-artist! :-) An interesting read, for sure.

This is a riviting account of Andy's life! For those who only think of the "I got it all together guy" from his great TV show, there is much more to his story. He relates his early career with his brothers (sucessful with the fanatical support of his father) but also his starving days in NY and around the USA. His life after his TV Show really paints a broader picture of the man and his environment. It's especially enjoyable for someone who appreciates the songs he sang and continues to sing today. A thoughtful account from his early life up until now (he recently turned 82). After reading the book you will feel you know him somewhat more than just a great singer. An enjoyable read!

I have been a fan of Andy Williams for over 50 years and was concerned about how well a memior/autobiography would come off. Boy was I pleasently suprised! This is a very well written, honest refreshing memior. His childhood reads like a mini-history of growing up in the midwest.

The background stories about his father, Kay Thompson and RFK are riveting. The book is filled with Andy's memories of many famous people.

This is where he is most refreshing. His open, honest style is wonderful. Absent from his narative was any reference to his Christianity. I found this to be very refreshing in itself. I was able to visit one of his book signing events in October, see him in concert in December and read this memior over the holidays. What I way to finish the year!

After being an Andy Williams fan for about 50 years, I loved the candidness of the events of his life as well as the dealings with which he's had with other well-known people througout his career. Several of the topics have been documented before as in his A&E Biography show and shows like Larry King Live a few years back but not in this much detail.

I've seen Andy probably 15 times through the years - state fairs, concerts in arenas, music halls, Vegas at Caesar's Palace, and of course Branson. He was fabulous always, and in light of the issues he had with performing live throughout the years, all you can say is that Andy is a true professional --- always giving the best he can for any audience. I am so happy he is at peace with performing after all of these years in Branson.

Also, as to his character --- his taking full responsibility for his breakup with Claudine; being with them during the whole Aspen ordeal; always providing for those he has had both relationships and business dealing with throughout the years; and always supporting important causes during his career. These are all marks of a good and caring person with much character. A perfect person - NO! A responsible one - DEFINITELY!

When I began really enjoying Andy Williams at age 14 or so, and trying to model my singing after him, I not only loved his music and his talent; I loved his person just as much. Singers are a dime-a-dozen; however, singers who make the listener/watcher feel good about listening are on a level all by themselves - Andy is right there.

Continued success, Andy. Thanks for sharing your story with us. We are all the better for it.

I've been a fan of Andy Williams for as long as I can remember. This book brings back fond memories of when my friends and I would sit outside on a warm night, drinking beer, and listening to "Canadian Sunset." The first time my husband and I went to Branson, it was still a town in developement, but "Moon River Theatre" was there and it was our first stop. The opening act was a comedian who was so funny my sides hurt from laughing, and I still laugh when I think of his juggling three balls in the air- the gold one was God, the other two were Adam and Eve, and they were discussing The Creation. Believe me, it was funny. But the real entertainment started when Andy Williams appeared, and the show was terrific.

We went back twice to Branson over the years, and I am happy that he is still there and going strong. The book was so entertaining that I was sad when I finished it. He is a man who had troubles and disappointments in his life, but also great success. And all the time he kept his dignity, not giving in to drugs, booze or falling back on off-color material to keep up with the times. He is a super entertainer and a good man. I wish him well.

It is rare that a cookbook is also a fine read, but this one is the best. Born in 1901 her story is the story of Oklahoma statehood. She was already cooking professionally by the time she was in her middle teens, and began a long career as a caterer and personal family cook to many of Oklahoma's early oil barons. In April, 1962, she finally opened her own full time business, "Cleora's Pastry Shop and Catering", but had to close it a few years later to take care of her ailing husband. She continued to cater into the mid 1980's while also gathering up nearly 70 years of recipes and over 80 years of memories.

This is both a tremendously diverse set of over 300 recipes, but is also an important history lesson as to what it meant to be black in the days of Jim Crow laws in the United States. She ruefully writes about her decision to become a hat maker in the late 1940's because of the prejudice she faced whenever she went into white owned department stores and was not allowed to try on hats or shoes before buying them, or being made to go into a back room so none of the other shoppers could see her. But this did not make her bitter, only more determined to be a success in a social environment which tried its best to prevent her from achieving any hope of equality.

She talks about family and growing up learning how to cook at her mother's side. Numerous recipes would be titled "Mother's Brandied Peaches", or "Mother's Gingerbread". Throughout the book are photos of cookware and utensils from the early part of the 20th century. This all adds to the enjoyment of knowing how she learned and evolved as a cook over the next half century. Where we need a cuisinart and food processors to cook, Cleora only needed her cast iron skillets and maybe a potato masher to create her delightful spreads.

But this is a cookbook and the delight is in her deceptively simple recipes. Things like "Mother's Hickory Nut Cake" start out; "Made with hickory nuts we gathered on the mountain behind Grandpa's house." This is a cookbook completely comfortable in supplying recipes as diverse as Soda Biscuits to Curried Lobster Scramble to Brazilian Casserole with Bananas.

Sure, as a working cook, I have the requisite cookbooks such as the New York Times Cookbook and others, but when I am in the mood for a good, simple to prepare, but ultimately satisfying meal, from breads through deserts, I grab my Cleora's Kitchen. And do not dare call this ethnic or soul food. As the subtitle declares, this is both a memoir and a cookbook celebrating "Eight Decades of Great American Food."

I collect cookbooks (and own about 2,000), and three of my all-time favorite authors are Edna Lewis, Vertamae, and the Darden sisters -- all of whom are African Americans. Their books are written with incredible warmth, and introduce each recipe so you'll know what to expect, and why it is special to them. Although Cleora Butler appears to have been a singularly gifted and accomplished cook, I didn't get the "warm fuzzies" derived from other African American authors. I had bought the hardcover edition, but ended up giving it away ... as a Northeastern WASP
who knew little about either African American or southern cooking, I really missed not having warm intros or descriptions of the recipes. This is a real shame, since Ms. Butler appears to have accomplished wonders in that environment during that period, and I really wanted to love her book.

This is a truly engaging book, which is not something commonly said about herbals. Matthew devotes much care to each herb he discusses, revealing a great deal of knowledge, experience and insight throughout the book. It is tremendously informative - as such, it's a book that invites study, and certainly frequent reference, for readers who are serious about herbs.

As a work by Matthew Wood The Book of Herbal Wisdom deserves more than 5 stars, but as a bound paper book it deserves 2 or 3. Although my copy is relatively new it is already beginning to literally fall apart. True, I do open it frequently, but that is all the more reason the book should be well-bound - ideally in sewn signatures. This book was written to be used. It should also be designed to be used.

If you want to know about herbs more than just buying supplements with "proprietary formulas" read this book. It is writen by a scholar, medicine man, and practitioner embodied in one person, Mathew Wood. The first 64 pages present both rational and spiritual foundations of herbology and read as a thriller. Following the author, you will understand fundamental fallacies of official medicine(called "biomedicine" by Wood)imposed on us by the cartel including pharmaceutical companies, FDA, AMA, and the majority of doctors. (Disclosure: I am not a medical doctor.)Biomedicine does not heal or cure, it "treats." It addresses symptoms rather than root causes of the decease. It kills bacterias rather than create the environment in which they cannot flourish. It feeds you drugs with sometimes horrible side-effects. The list goes on and on but the bottom line is this: official medicine is not about your health, it is about money.

The second part of the book is dedicated to detailed descriptions of more than 40 herbs, with their history going way back to ancient Greece and medieval Europe as well as China. Matthew Wood describes patient patterns and situations in which they can be beneficially used, how they should be used, and illustrates their applications with multiple case histories from both historical and his own pratices. Having read the book, you will want to have many of these herbs in your medicine cabinet making teas, decoctions, infusions, salves and, perhaps, even your own tinctures.

I have been collecting a small library of alternative (why do they call it this way??) and herbal medicine, and this book stand in it prominently as a superstar. Buy it, read it, and use its recommendations to live full healthy life.

The author is very knowledgeable and gives a thorough background of each herb that he describes. He includes a lot of scientific information, as well as more mystical/spiritual and historical uses of each herbs, giving the book a nice balance. It did give us some ideas, but I was expecting a few more details. I didn't want blueprints, but more sketches and tips would have been nice. I realize that when a person builds a cabin it is a very personalized thing, but Fears left me always looking for more information.

I am glad that I bought this book, and it will remain in my collection for reference for a long time, but I will keep looking for a somewhat more informative cabin book.

I loved this book. I bought it for my father for christmas, then bought one for myself. I actually read it front to back (like a novel), it's so well-written. Even though my dream cabin is financially a few years off and geographically a few more, I will be following many of the guidelines set out in this book, with some more green ideas (solar panels, reusing water, etc). I would recommend this to anyone wanting to build a cabin of their own, or just know more about them. Great book for anyone. I loved it.

This is an entertaining, well written book, funny in places, and informative. It tells you all about how to build a wood-fired room heater that happens to also be a couch or window seat. It is a little difficult for me to envision how I would integrate this into my current home, but in my case, the same could be said for a conventional woodstove or fireplace. If your brain isn't petrified yet, and you are still building your dreamhouse in your head, or you are just curious about alternative technology, I highly reccommend this book.

I read this book cover to cover and it was an excellent read for a DIY'er such as me. I purchased the book based upon my interest in the subject of comfort heating and the title. It was fun to read about the successes and pitfalls of those who have built this type of heater. Unfortunately, where I live in Southern California wood burning in fire places and heaters has been banned by the Air Quality Management District. So clearly something like this would have to be a bootleg project as you couldn't get a building permit for it. But then again some things are worth doing and this project would be one of them. I think it would be great for a future home or a cabin. However, I wouldn't be willing to modify my current home to install on.

The book itself was very informative and I believe it accomplishes its purpose to inform and inspire someone to tackle a project such as this if you have an interest in such things. Some of the drawings were a little quirky and I realize there is no exact science to it yet that can be referred to. However, for those willing to take the time and tinker with the project I think it will work well.

most fun book I have ever bought! ordered the book, had it two days later with a handwritten note from the author. read it 5 or 6 times in 2 days, then built a test stove in the front yard in about an hour. How can one rightly deduct a star when the book in question performs it's intended purpose and confirms to the reader whether its subject is the right solution for them? Any author can tell you that some particular choice solves all the world's problems, but it is less common to find a book which actually tells the reader the downsides of its subject and how to determine whether it suits your particular need and personality or not. In that regard, then, this book certainly succeeds. It tells the reader exactly what is involved in the construction, what kind of performance to expect, and how much maintenance is realistically involved. That seems worthy of an addition star to me, even if I never build a rocket stove. Would you drop a star from a book about sky diving because you decided you didn't want to jump out of an airplane?

This book does a fine job of explaining the concepts of "rocket" style wood stove design and construction. This 2nd edition also includes reports from individual designers and users, which I tend to find very valuable as it grounds the material in real-world applications. The book covers all important concepts in detail and admirably explains which dimensions are important and which are less so. I found the step-by-step pictures to be invaluable to helping the reader actually build their own stove, but I also found some of the descriptions and associated diagrams to be confusing. A few things that were included in diagrams were not well explained or at least not well understood by this reader without multiple readings. To the authors' credit, however, some of the details are difficult to describe with words. I also found that while the authors do a good job of telling the reader the potential dangers of a positive-pressure flue system, they didn't describe their own methods for sealing metal duct systems.

In short, this book would be extremely valuable to those contemplating a wood heating system of any type, but it is a must for those seeking 90% efficiency from a wood-burning appliance for home heating. Masonry heaters can often match this efficiency (see The Book of Masonry Stoves for more), but they start at about US$10,000 and typically require advanced masonry skills. I have a personal affection for masonry heaters with glass viewing doors and top ovens, but a rocket stove is much more accessible for a do-it-yourselfer and is more versatile to fit both fast radiant and slow mass heating needs. Whole-house masonry heaters can't heat up quickly, which could matter to people that are away from home for long periods. Rocket stoves can heat you up rapidly while still offering substantial heat storage, if you build them to do so. They are certainly worth your consideration and this book is written by the world's foremost fiddlers with Rocket Stoves. This 2nd edition still comes across as a work in progress, but Rocket Stoves already have proven themselves to be long-term, efficient solutions to many heating needs. With this book in hand, virtually anyone can build their own heating solution powered by a renewable resource.
